2024-01-16 Regional Ecosystem Studies Training II (Forest B Route) “Satoyama Management Fieldwork Training” ①

As part of a first-year class in Department of Ecoregion Science Faculty of Agriculture, called "Regional Ecosystem Studies Practical Training II (Forest Route B)," Wan went on a fieldwork training session on Satoyama management at Noyamakita and Rokudoyama Parks in Tokyo together with Professor Toda Hiroto and his students.
First, we had the opportunity to experience volunteering in park management.
The park manager and volunteers gave the dog an explanation about the park's history, as well as safety precautions to take when carrying out activities there, and then the dog participated in volunteer work cutting undergrowth in the grove.
Dividing into small groups, the group used sickles and pruning shears to slowly cut down the thick bamboo grass growing on the forest floor.

Although Hakken and Koken couldn't hold the sickle, he took the lead and cheered on the group!
Good luck everyone!
On this day, the sun was warm despite it being winter.
As I worked hard cutting the bamboo, I started to sweat.

The third and fourth photos show how the tools are cleaned after work.
I cleaned off the dirt from the sickle and pruning shears, sharpened the blades with a whetstone, and sprayed them with anti-rust treatment.
I also thoroughly washed and dried the helmet I borrowed.

In the afternoon, we took a walk around the park while listening to an outdoor explanation about the natural environment from a graduate student.
The fifth photo shows us listening to an explanation about compost.
Here, they make compost using fallen leaves collected from the Satoyama forest.
The training is still on!
The rest will be introduced next week.
