2022-07-08 Forestry training “Pruning”

Continuing from Monday, we visited TUAT 's experimental forest, Field Museum (FM) to see the plants and trees.
Today is the last day of our three-part introduction to the intensive "Silkworm Science Training" course at the Department of Department of Ecoregion Science Faculty of Agriculture.
Today's practical lesson will be pruning cypress trees!
Pruning is the process of cutting off excess or dead branches.
You can harvest high-quality, knotless wood by dropping the branches of cypress trees that grow well and have well-shaped trunks!
First, as shown in the first photo, the dog climbs halfway up the tree using a ladder, and then uses the branches to climb up.
It's pretty dark in a forest with lots of branches.
A student is climbing a tree and looking for "Riki-eda".
A “power branch” is the lowest branch that receives direct sunlight from the crown of a tree.
I think it looks a little thicker.

Second photo,
Once he finds a power branch, he uses a saw to cut the lower branches neatly.
The branches below the power branch only receive sunlight filtering through the trees, so even if you drop a living branch, it won't have a big impact on the tree's growth.

The third photo also shows pruning.
As the tree continues to drop its branches, sunlight enters the dark forest and brightens it up.
You can feel the effects of your work and get motivated!

The red machine you are looking at in the fourth photo is a "branching machine".
One that was installed under the trunk of a cypress tree and will be moved from now on!
A branch cutter is a machine with a chainsaw attached to it, and as shown in the fifth photo, it rotates while climbing up to cut branches.
It's a convenient device that climbs trees instead of people, but the problem is that it's too heavy to carry around in the mountains.
The intensive training for 4 days and 3 nights was very fulfilling and I learned a lot!
After all, there are so many things you can learn in a real forest!
