Establishment of a research platform for smart breeding of next-generation rice varieties adapted to the future global environment

Principal Investigator: Professor Taiichiro Okawa
(Institute of Agriculture, Division of Science of Biological Production)
"Next-generation Rice Variety Smart Breeding Research Team"
Crops such as rice and wheat have been developed to be suitable for large amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, but varieties suitable for environmental conservation agriculture and global environmental changes such as global warming and super typhoons have not yet been developed. In this research, we aim to be the first in the world to build a foundation for smart breeding of next-generation rice varieties suitable for the future global environment based on big data such as stress resistance to lodging, flooding, and drought, nutrient utilization efficiency in roots, and symbiotic microbial communities, as well as rice genome data. Our university has many research results in rice genome breeding, resource-recycling crop production, and information engineering. We would like to develop and implement edible varieties and high-value-added sake rice varieties that contribute to the food problems of the world and Asia and to improving Japan's food self-sufficiency rate through industry-academia collaboration.

Dialogical Studies of Human-Animal Relationships for the Realization of One Health

Principal Investigator: Associate Professor Tsuyoshi Niimura
(Institute of Agriculture, Division of Science of Biological Production)
"One Health Research Team"
Our research team has a vision to ensure the health of humans and the planet by ensuring animal welfare, and aims to create a form of One Health that is unique TUAT. To achieve this, we will clarify the past, present, and future of the relationship between humans and animals. In other words, we will unravel the origins of domestication, i.e., why did animals approach and coexist with humans? by analyzing the whole genome of domesticated species and their ancestors, and we will clarify the question of why ensuring the comfort of livestock improves the quality of livestock products by integrated omics analysis of multiple organs and livestock products. Furthermore, we will realize "conversation with animals" by developing Animal Computer Interaction technology that grasps and controls animal emotions. By applying these concepts and technologies to various animals, we aim to create an interactive and sustainable society in which humans and animals coexist.

Developing lifelong companion robots using eco-friendly, locally sourced materials and sustainable AI

Principal Investigator: VENTURE Professor Gentiane
(Institute of Engineering, Division of Advanced Mechanical Systems Engineering)
"Kamirobo Team"
Lifetime products are usually made of high quality and durable materials such as metal, leather, cotton, wool, wood and other organic materials. However, very few materials for building robots are recyclable, biodegradable and available from renewable resources. We need to create an eco-friendly paper material that has the strength to be applicable to robots. This project aims to build a lifelong companion robot based on locally sourced materials and sustainable AI. This research project is one step in a long process of finding the best materials and the best software architecture to build a robot that will be a lifelong partner and reduce the impact on the environment.
